Hauraki Gulf Sport fishing Charters

Kingfish
"A fantastic kingfish right in front of the city, unforgettable" ... Andy Gofton
Snapper
"A solid snapper that fell to my first bait. Fabulous"

Auckland's local waters have an excellent sport fishery, much of which is only minutes from the downtown waterfront. The Waitemata harbour and Hauraki gulf cradle twelve islands, most are uninhabited and provide beautiful scenery around most of the fishing locations.

Targeted species in the area are snapper, yellowtail kingfish, kahawai and trevally. Snapper school locally in spring, but are caught year round. School fish are around the 2-8lb. Adult snapper are fished for around reefs and can grow up to 30lb (top right picture).

Yellowtail kingfish are a prized catch and grow up to 80lb, though 30lb is more average. The kingi's can be ambushed around reefs and structure, some surprisingly close to the city (top left picture).

Kahawai (pronounced car-ha-why) are a saltwater salmon that grow up to 6lbs. They are a school fish that often jump spectacularly when hooked up. The kahawai is an excellent fish to catch on saltwater fly tackle (bottom right picture), inhabiting shallow reefs where strong tidal flow produces a challenge for the angler. Spinning and jigging are also rewarding methods for catching these fighters.

Other species that can surprise you are John dory, a prehistoric looking fish that despite it's unusual appearance is very tasty. Silver trevally can be caught here and are similar to the jacks found in the northern hemisphere. All of the species mentioned here can be tackled on gear down to 6lb test or fly, apart from the kingfish who's fighting tactics and nature of the terrain can stretch most experts in the middle tackle classes. We have a full selection of tackle available to customers, including fly fishing.

Our fishing season is year round, though species vary in season. Check our report column to see what the catch of the month is and what is fishing well at present.
