Fishing Report

Hauraki Gulf (September 2010)

Early signs of the upcoming schooling season are positive. While the harbour is still running at a cool 15C there are signs out in the gulf that the change of season has started. Some of our forays out into the middle of the gulf have turned up trumps. Out from Gannet rock in 40m was a good producer and around the corner a bit out in the trough from Hooks bay has been fairly consistent, snapper around the 40cm and no shortage of john dory as well. Around the Noises in the shallow patches are holding fish but the water is still very clear so a little stealth is required. As usual, a lot of burley is required in the reef and the fish are moving with the tide. Out on the worm beds the fishing has been slightly better of late. In 28m east of Tiri there seems to be a steady show of snapper, but schools have not yet extended and there is a lot of water between them. Some good fishing continues on the light foul out from Castor Bay and down to the Black Rocks at Takapuna with snapper up to 4kgs from the latter on our last trip there. Rangitoto shallows are still fishing ok with the lighthouse out to A buoy showing some promise on a few occasions. The crays are still in shallow I hear while the visibility is at its best. The sisters at Rakino have been one spot that was murmured about in hushed tones amongst those on a trailer boat with a nice bin of mixed size snapper last weekend. I look forward to poking around out on the mud North of the Noises round about now. While there are less fish sometimes the quality makes up for it with males being the predominant early migrants and they can be aggressive on the bite. It is usual for September that the northern end of the Gulf around Takatu and Kawau to heat up with snapper and this has been the case for the commercial guys. I am sure we will be into this activity in a matter or weeks rather than later. Roll on summer!

Tight lines.
